2001 BMW 7 Series 740iL Sport

Dealer notes

Few luxury sedans capture BMW’s classic appeal quite like the E38 7 Series. With its beautifully balanced proportions, understated styling, and smooth V8 power, the 2001 BMW 740iL represents the final model year of one of the marque’s most admired flagship sedans. This example combines the spaciousness of the long-wheelbase model with the distinctive presentation of the Sport Package, newly available on the 740iL for 2001. Carfax certified as a two-owner vehicle with no accidents or damage reported or detectable, this fine BMW has clearly lived a pampered existence, as evidenced by its outstanding condition and originality. Showing just 75,833 miles, it offers a compelling opportunity to acquire a carefully preserved example of a modern BMW classic. Finished in Anthracite Metallic, the exterior pairs elegant lines with Shadowline trim, black side moldings, and handsome staggered 18-inch M-Parallel wheels. Body-colored bumpers and rocker extensions complete the cohesive appearance, while xenon headlights, fog lamps, power-folding heated mirrors, and Park Distance Control provide welcome everyday convenience. The result is a flagship sedan with a subtle sporting character that still looks distinguished today. Inside, Sand Beige Montana leather and rich Vavona Redwood trim create a warm, inviting cabin. The long-wheelbase configuration provides generous rear-seat space, while the Sport, Cold Weather, and Comfort Packages complement an extensive equipment list. Heated, power-adjustable Active Comfort front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a sliding glass sunroof, navigation, a power rear sunshade, and a trunk-mounted six-disc CD changer reflect the thoughtful luxury that made the 7 Series BMW’s premier sedan. Under the hood, the naturally aspirated 4.4-liter M62 V8 produces a factory-rated 282 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque, delivering effortless acceleration and relaxed highway cruising. A five-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, combining smooth operation with the balanced driving character enthusiasts associate with classic BMWs. This particular 740iL also has an intriguing ownership story. According to the longtime owner’s account supplied with its history, the car was specially ordered as a company vehicle for Hans Duenzi, described as a senior BMW engineering executive. After approximately six months of use, it was purchased in 2001 as a gift for the owner’s wife. He described it as sparingly driven, always stored in a heated garage, and never driven in snow or inclement weather. He also emphasized meticulous BMW servicing, with recommended work performed without expense spared. Its history includes a documented appearance on Bring a Trailer in February 2021, providing an additional reference point for its provenance and condition at that time. Service reported in that auction included replacement of the valve-cover and upper timing-cover gaskets, alternator, battery, and accessory belts during the preceding year. The original auction can be viewed here: 2001 BMW 740iL Sport on Bring a Trailer. For the enthusiast who appreciates understated luxury, traditional craftsmanship, and an engaging rear-wheel-drive V8 sedan, this final-year 740iL Sport is a particularly appealing find. Its tasteful specification, low mileage, and compelling history make it a worthy addition to a collection—or a wonderfully distinctive car to enjoy on the road.
